TLUSA WWII Memorial -- Honor Flight

Thank You to all the TLUSA Trailmen that participated in the TLUSA WWII Memorial -- Honor Flight, Sept. 28th 2014.

There were several DC area Trail Life Troops that greeted WWII Veterans arriving with the Puget Sound Honor Flight at the National WWII Memorial in DC. Adventurers Will Moore, VA-4031 sang the National Athem and James McCaskey, VA-717 performed “Taps” while Trailmen and leaders led the veterans in the Pledge of Allegiance. The Trailmen welcomed and thanked the veterans for their service with handshakes and salutes.

I have about 100 photos and can put them in a drop box for Trail Life USA. Let me know. Here are a few from today.

TLUSA & AHG Happenings

Trail Life USA and American Heritage Girls in our Baltimore area in Sept. 2014.

/ / / / / / /  TLUSA:  / / / / / / / / /

We have had a great beginning to the Trail Life Program since January of this year. We have gone on several camping trips, been canoeing, camped and backpacked in the backcountry in Smokey Mountains TN, participated in service projects, and have been doing well in our training with Troop 518 in Joppa, MD. We began with the Navigators (middle school boys) and Adventurers (high school boys). We are pleased to announce that  we have added the Woodlands (elementary age boys) to troop 518 at Sovereign Grace Church, Joppa, MD.

We had a great Open House on Monday, Sept 8, and as a result, we have over a dozen new boys visit Troop MD0518 this last Monday meeting.

We look forward to a great Fall Trail Life season!

Now named, TLUSA Camp Aiken

“This camp property and the endowment are generous gifts that fit with our core value to remain debt averse,” said John Stemberger, Chairman of the TLUSA Board of Directors. “At the same time, it gives us a central, accessible location from which to better train youth and adult leaders in conducting our robust outdoor program.”

In order to begin the Chartering Process, we need to fill the following Adult Volunteer Charter Positions. Greater Grace Church has expressed support to begin the Charter process, but we would need:

1. Charter Representative: Facilitates the relationship between the local AHG Troop and the Charter Organization. Participates in local Troop Board meetings as a non-voting member. Approves all adult leadership for local Troop. Provides leadership, oversight and conflict resolution if needed.

2. Coordinator (Troop Leader): Leads the Troop Ministry Team and oversees the general operation of the local Troop. Helps to recruit, select and train all adult leadership. Facilitates Troop Ministry Team Leaders’ meetings. Serves as the liaison between AHG, Inc. and the Charter Representative. Is responsible for guiding the Troop towards its goals and accomplishing the mission of the AHG.

3. Vice-Coordinator: Assists Coordinator with all responsibilities and considered “Coordinator-in-training.” The actual roles performed shall be divided as spiritual gifts and personalities dictate.

4. Treasurer: Oversees Troop finances. Helps to determine guidelines pertaining to Troop checking account, both acquiring and maintaining it. Helps to create a Troop budget.

5. Troop Shepherd (Chaplain): Is concerned about the “care and feeding” of the Troop’s member and looks over the “flock”. The Troop Shepherd cares for each AHG member encouraging them in their spiritual walk. Will lead prayer before Ministry Team meetings and pray for the Troop. Will get to know each girl and volunteer and follow up on absent members.

6. Additional Adult Leaders: In addition to the Charter Positions above, the troop needs registered adults to help supervise, transport, and provide guidance through the troop committee. Adults also help with the 5 Levels within the troop.

Please prayerfully consider these positions as we look to begin AHG in our area. We can provide more info on TLUSA and AHG as requested, so please - let's chat.

Thank you and God bless -

AHG MD1208 in the News

We have 62 girls registered or re-registered through AHG Connect as of this morning! We are expecting re-registrations from 10+ remaining families and new registrations from an additional 10+ families. So, it is looking like we will have a larger troop again this year. What a blessing!

Since I know our girls are both patriotic and creative, I draw your attention to a contest that AHG is promoting on behalf of Constituting America. A flyer is attached with rules, prizes, etc or visit They are seeking original work (poetry, music, essays, PSAs and more) based on the US Constitution. Submissions may come from children and adults. I know we have creative+patriotic moms, dads and siblings, too! The deadline is September 17.

As I close today, I ask you to reflect upon your journey in bringing your daughter to AHG. It might have been 5 years ago, it might have been 5 days ago. Maybe it was for friendships, maybe it was from fears of this world, maybe it was for her college applications. You may not recognize it now, but I am confidant that it was a God moment and I thank you for acting on it, consciously or unconsciously.

I am so excited about our coming year and working with all of you to build these women of integrity. I am blessed to be a part of it and walk with you all on this journey. Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, concerns or ideas as we move forward.

NEWS from AHG MD 1208
Our 4th year in the Laurel Independence Day Parade was our best yet!
Thank you to everyone who participated, prayed for our safety and success, and cheered us on from the audience. The weather was ideal, the crowds were large and enthusiastic and we had a decent turnout given the time of year. For the first time, we were able to have girls carrying the AHG banner and we had girls carrying AHG Creed virtue signs! Thanks Main Street Festival Parade parents for your feedback in stepping things up!!! Thanks to Deacon Bob for being with us, too! I appreciate everyone’s efforts at making this a fun, patriotic service and outreach opportunity. Please send me any rose, bud, thorns from this event. We were awarded Most Outstanding Scout Troop by the City of Laurel! Congratulations!
Ft. McHenry Visit date set for Wednesday, August 20th. This will be a family event and we will be going during the day to avoid weekend crowds and get the most out of the programming. Stay tuned for the flyer which will list the activities and which badge requirements will be met. We hope you will be able to work this event into your end of summer schedule.
Potential Adult Leaders here’s a free and anonymous online survey to test your gifts, which you could potentially use to help others.

Perhaps this discernment process might lead you to the right opportunity?

Parents: Online Registration is now live on AHGconnect!

If you haven't already done so, it's time to register your daughter with AHG for the 2014-2015 Program Year! This year, the registration process will be 100% online through AHG's new online registration tool, AHGconnect. You will receive an email from your Troop Coordinator with a link inviting you to register your family on AHGconnect. You'll still pay registration fees directly to your Troop at the Troop's Info Meeting.

NEW Youth Protection Training:

This is an excellent training session required for registered AHG leaders - Well worth taking the time (45 minutes) to retake this new child protection program.

AHG is pleased to announce the release of KEYS to Child Safety, a child safety training which addresses Health & Safety Guidelines specific to the AHG program as well as best practices for protecting the emotional, physical, and social well-being of both girl and adult members. Available @

TLUSA June/July

TLUSA MD0518, Joppa MD @ Expedition: Ohio
2014 Trail Life Camporee at Hocking Hills Canoe Livery, near Logan Ohio
"Our outdoors adventure troop goes camping once a month..."

Steve Padgett (Troopmaster) reported 9 troops, 4 states, 206 Trailmen and untold tons of fun and fellowship. Everyone left completely pumped about Trail Life USA. It was worth every minute of the 8 hour drive for MD 518. And it was a perfect trip, everyone slept on the way home.

Kent Marks (a participant from another Troop) said -- The ExpOhio event was an awesome time for everyone. Zip lines, canopy tours, canoeing, fishing, hiking, rock climbing, rappelling and a local Shawnee Native American Indian gave a talk to the Trail men. God even smiled on us after a wet introduction! Nat' Director of Field Ops Rob Green, Board Chair John Stemberger, and CEO Mark Hancock made a Skype visit at the Saturday evening campfire and managed to pump the camper up even more.

Welcome our new Central Maryland
Ministry Expansion Lead (MEL)
Sheila Bisson
Sheila began her involvement with AHG in the Spring of 2010 when she helped start a troop in Laurel, MD, MD1208. She has held a number of different positions within the troop including Pioneer/Patriot leader and Troop Coordinator. She has two children, both high school students, and enjoys spending her summers going to AHG and youth group summer camps.  She is very excited to help others bring their dream of starting an AHG troop into a reality and share the AHG ministry with as many girls as possible.  She has seen the profound effect that AHG can have in the lives of young women.  She has a passion for sharing the AHG mission with others and teaching girls to serve others as Jesus served.
Professionally, Sheila works part time as a nurse, a ministry she also loves.  She is active in her local church St. Mary of the Mills where her daughter’s AHG troop is chartered.  In her spare time, she loves to go camping, go rock climbing, and read a good book in a hammock.
